Château du Retout presently has 34 hectares of vines: 32 hectares in the Haut-Médoc appellation and 2 hectares of mixed white wine varieties.
The vineyard is mostly located on a gravelly rise. A mill dating from the 13th century is in the middle of the vineyard, at its highest point (altitude of 17 metres).
The terroir consists of two main soil types: clay and gravel at the bottom of the rise and deep Garonne gravel on the top.
The vines (68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot) are an average 30 years old and vine density is 6,666 per hectare.
Viticultural practices at Château du Retout are completely in line with the principles of sustainable agriculture. All vineyard operations and investments are in keeping with this philosophy.
Grass is left to grow between the vine rows and weeding underneath the vines is alternately mechanical and chemical. 100% natural fertilisers (horse manure and compost), certifiably organic crop protection products, and sustainable vineyard treatments are all part of this winegrowing philosophy.
There is nothing whatsoever incompatible between sustainable viticulture and quality. In fact, our methods are entirely in keeping with both goals.
Leaf thinning and bud pruning lead to better fruit and are also a natural way to help fight against certain vine diseases.
Our efforts to produce great grapes include training the vines higher, reducing vigour, the targeted use of fertilisers, green harvesting, and weekly monitoring of the vines (with daily monitoring of the grapes leading up to the harvest).
